Real Imaging RUTH: Radiation free breast cancer detection
Patient mounted robot
Early detection is the key to improving breast cancer survival rates, but mammography is not the ideal method to accomplish this goal. On this point, medical experts across the globe agree. Not as clear is what could do the job without the disadvantages of mammography — which often causes pain or discomfort; emits radiation; cannot properly image dense breast tissue; relies on a radiologist’s interpretation of the image; and is not recommended for routine screening of women under age 40 or 50. Built on principles from existing technologies and mathematics, MIRA enables functional quantitative analysis of 3D and infrared signals emitted from cancerous and benign breast tissue .... Read More Though a medical doctor will oversee screenings with RUTH, “automatic” is one of its key features. Results will not have to be interpreted by human eyes, thanks to the device’s unique process of calibration using mathematical algorithms formulated from three-dimensional models of hundreds of women with and without malignancies. The algorithms provide unprecedented accuracy, as Real Imaging has demonstrated in blind studies.

As both founders of the company had previously worked with tiko, they approached us in a very early stage. Tiko was asked to perform a strategic study in quest for the answer to the simple question: what is the product that should be developed from the core technology. With the assistance of an economist we have explored a wide range of ideas starting from: adjunct device for digital mammography; clinical breast exam device; to convenience care clinics test booth. To each we presented a business plan and a list of decision-making parameters.
As we focused on a standalone product, we conducted a vast human engineering study gathering data that was not available, analyzing it and developing various models that were tested to meet the special dynamic needs of the exam. We have tested environments and suggested different morphologies to the product. Wall and ceiling mounted concepts were checked. The design focused on a chair-based solution providing the patient with the highest degree of comfort and control.
The implementation of the chosen styling option took us to a journey of large machine design, with quick real size models for the evaluation of scale, usability and perception. We took the project forward developing the flow of work, analyzing touch display resources, designing the GUI of the system and implementing it into the detailed design of the station.
We then performed the task of mechanical engineering of all the housing shells and the interface of it to the framework and electronics done by our mechanical partners.
