ElastiMed manipulates smart Artificial Muscles (EAP) into thin linear actuators, fashioned as a sleek stocking wrapped around the leg. This wearable device mimics the rhythmic activity of calf muscles, helping to combat various medical conditions by improving circulation in the lower extremities. In a tight collaboration with Nomadity, Tiko's wearable technology arm, we solidified the product vision and refocused the efforts on a medical device application. A major design challenge was optimizing the special polymer, manipulated into thin, flexible bands that extend and contract to an electric pulse. Read More Extensive researched went into developing the right stretch mechanism, and the interfacing of this agile material with nonflexible fabrics to twist and stretch in sync around the leg. Different concepts were tested, until a stable structure and wearable cut was reached, including LED indicators and energy source positioning. On top of styling and effective design for manufacturing, we also assisted the company with creative funding. One highlight that is already public is the product winning the EU Horizon 2020 research and innovation grant.
